Norman Bethune in China: A Short Illustrated Biographical Account

Norman Bethune was a Canadian thoracic surgeon and a member of the Communist Party of Canada. The Communist Parties of Canada and the United States sent him to China in 1938. He reached Yan'an that spring, met Chairman Mao there, and was appointed medical advisor to the Shanxi–Chaha'er–Hebei Military Area, serving the 8th Route Army and the people of the border region.

In eighteen months he set up a model hospital at Songyankou and trained its staff, designed instruments its workshops could make, wrote a manual for divisional field hospitals in guerrilla war, and operated at the front. He turned his monthly allowance over to the wounded. He died at Yellow Stone Village on November 12, 1939, of blood poisoning contracted while operating. Mao's essay on him, written that December, closes this volume; the 114 plates before it were published by the Foreign Languages Press, Beijing, in 1975, and are restored for this edition.
