V. I. Lenin wrote Imperialism and the Split in Socialism just months after Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism. In this short pamphlet Lenin further elucidates the basic features of imperialism, particularly how the bourgeoisie in the imperialist countries uses its superprofits from the colonies and semi-colonies to bribe the upper crust of the proletariat in order to stave off revolution. Lenin contextualizes the break from Social-Democracy that the Bolsheviks effected beginning in 1916 when the old European parties aligned on the side of "their" imperialists instead of the international proletariat, arming the proletariat with a vital weapon for revolution in the imperialist countries and restoring the revolutionary essence of Marxism.
