In this short article Engels criticizes the erroneous anarchist conception of authority. This text also briefly discusses the dialectical relationship between leaders and led, and expresses, in germinal form, the dialectical materialist thesis on leadership. This would later be developed and clarified more by the subsequent great leaders of the international proletariat; Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Chairman Gonzalo, especially in regards to the relationship between classes, Party, leaders, and masses.
