The two essays collected in this work were presented by Mao Zedong as lectures given at the Anti-Japanese Military and Political College in Yenan in 1937. Both essays were written in order to expose the subjectivist errors of dogmatism and empiricism present in the Communist Party of China. In On Practice Mao masterfully explains and develops the Marxist theory of knowledge, emphasizing how knowledge is transformed into practice and vice versa. In On Contradiction Mao explains and develops the essence of dialectics, which is the law of contradiction, establishing it as the fundamental law of dialectics.
